2nd Annual Grand Masquerade Gala With Doc Scantlin Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club

Doc Scantlin Pre Code Hollywood

Thanks to a recent $8 million renovation, the gorgeous art-deco Bethesda Theatre is now Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club, a hot spot for live music, dining and drinking.

Hollywood’s saucy side as the 2nd Annual Grand Masquerade Gala takes over the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club. Big band conductor Doc Scantlin leads his Imperial Palms Orchestra in a tribute to the bawdy bygone days of entertainment, before the censors took the spice out. Betty Boop-esque cabaret singer Chou Chou and retro performers The Girlfriends join in for an evening of rare, un-P.C. songs, slightly burlesque dance numbers and a recreation of Sally Rand’s famous Fan Dance. Family fare this not! Fancy dress is optional, but encouraged; there will be a costume contest with prizes. And the dance floor will be open to all blithe spirits looking to cut a rug. Read More…

The wine was flowing and the band was swinging Aug. 30 at the Fabulous 40s Party at historic Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg. More than 125 guests flocked to the event, some wearing modern clothing, others dressed in the garb of World War II. “Oatlands is the most elegant, beautiful place in Northern Virginia,” said Oatlands Executive Director Andrea McGimsey. “So you put these elements [our food and drink partners, Dance King Studios and Doc Scantlin] together in the setting of Oatlands? And you’ve got one amazing shindig.” Read More…

Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra performed on August 8, 2014 at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club – 7719 Wisconsin Avenue, in Bethesda MD.

Forbes magazine declared Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra the “best band in America.” And that was before they attained a huge following for their entertainment value and focus on music of the 1930’s. Doc Scantlin’s Orchestra’s performance Friday night was likened by many in the audience to going to Birdland or other jazz clubs or cabarets in Manhattan. This magic flowed from the combination of the Orchestra and the setting at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club. Read More…

For Bandleader Doc Scantlin and Wife Chou Chou, a Life Inspired by the 1930s

Doc Scantlin

For over a decade, dapper Doc Scantlin has kept the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s alive for Washington, DC and others internationally.

She wears a red tulle dress with a tight bustier with sequins that frame her impressive decolletage, a plume of tulle flowing down the back of her legs. A red-feathered headdress shivers upon her blond updo, above a pale face with striking red lipstick. She’s Chou Chou Scantlin, a songstress built like a Barbie doll, crooning “As Time Goes By.” Behind her, Doc Scantlin, her husband, leads his Imperial Palms Orchestra , a 15-piece, 1930s-themed band that has been a fixture in the Washington area for more than 20 years.  Read More…
